As a youth camp employee or volunteer you are an important part of a child’s experience at camp. They come to camp to learn and have fun and it’s critical that they are able to do this in an environment that is safe and free from any kind of harm.</textformat><textformat leading='2' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>In this training we will cover the very basics of youth camp safety. To get started, click the next button.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Everyone involved with these camps needs to follow all the applicable policies and procedures of the University of Maine, including additional policies and procedures specific to their camp. To support these efforts we have developed a camp safety checklist that designed address the security and safety needs for camps conducted at The University of Maine. Before we get started, please take a few moments to review the Youth Camp Resources Guide You may find it helpful to print the document and to take notes as you review the learning module.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>The goals of this training are to:</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'> - ensure the security and safety of campers.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'> - review the requirements and guidance for planning and managing the risks associated with camps.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'> - present an organizational structure that creates communication between all groups, on and off campus, who are involved in providing security and safety for our camps, and to</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>- provide personnel with training, resource management, and information systems to support the planning and management of camp programs.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>So, let’s dig in.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>First, to be sure that it’s clear that you are a staff member at the camp, it is highly recommended that you wear a camp uniform or shirt and/or your credentials that include a photo ID.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Always remember to practice and enforce the Rule of Three: always at least 3 people together.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Never be alone with a single child, have buddies with a camper, and always have another staff member present.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Of course, campers will need to use the restroom or the locker room while at camp. It’s important that you follow this set of guidelines. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='48' indent='-24'>• For campus public restrooms, youmust ensure that suspicious or unknown individuals do not occupy the restroom before allowing children to use the facilities.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='48' indent='-24'>• Never be alone with a child, including a restroom or locker room. Two staff members shall be present at all times or the activity being supervised shall include more than two people in the space.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='48' indent='-24'>• Use the buddy system when going to the bathroom.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='48' indent='-24'>• If the child is under the age of 7, a counselor must accompany the child to the bathroom. It’s best for younger children to do group bathroom breaks.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='48' indent='-24'>• No camper should be going to the bathroom by himself or herself at any time.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Of course, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. You must treat all children equally regardless of grounds of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, or disability. Respect their rights to NOT be touched in any way that makes them feel uncomfortable and preserve their right to say “no.” Youth are NOT to be touched on areas of their bodies that would normally be covered by a bathing suit.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Please click the button below for additional information.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Managing the risks associated with University youth camps is everyone’s responsibility. Click the video below to hear more.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Remember that the safety of the children is our first responsibility. It’s important that you Focus on the campers, not on socializing with peers or using your cell phone for personal matters. Use head counts and be able to observe all your campers. Account for all campers at all times. If, at any time, you suspect a camper is missing, immediately notify the University Police and the Camp Director. Campers should NEVER be left alone – have a buddy system in place.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Now, let’s talk about getting from one place to another with campers. When walking somewhere on Campus, sidewalks and crosswalks must be used at all times. When walking with youth make sure there is a staff member in the front, and back of the walking line to ensure that all campers are safe and accounted for. Use the crosswalks with caution. All drivers must be pre-approved by their department.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>We can’t stress enough that supervision of campers is key. Youth are to be within visual and hearing supervision at all times. The parent or caregiver must show his or her ID when picking up the child. Never release a youth to anyone other than the authorized parent or guardian. Do not allow anyone to remove a camper from camp without the express permission of the camp director.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Now, let’s talk about injuries and body fluids. Use the following safety precautions.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 9, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='9' indent='-9'>• Participants who are bleeding must leave the activity until bleeding is totally stopped.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 9, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='9' indent='-9'>• In order to return to the activity, all soiled clothing must be removed and staff will find a clothing alternative.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 9, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='9' indent='-9'>• The wound must be cared for appropriately before returning to any activity.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 9, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='9' indent='-9'>• If you encounter what you suspect to be blood or other bodily fluids, DO NOT CLEAN IT UP unless you have proper training and PPE. Keep others away.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 9, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='9' indent='-9'>• All potential exposure incidents MUST be reported to your supervisor or the camp director immediately.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 9, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='9' indent='-9'>• In all cases, promptly notify your supervisor and aid him or her in completion of the workplace injury report.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Provide first aid ONLY if you are properly trained, it is part of your job responsibilities, and you have appropriate supplies. Emergency Action Plans include the following information:</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 24, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='24' indent='-24'>ü Types of hazards present</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 24, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='24' indent='-24'>ü Alarm systems & how to sound the alarm</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 24, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='24' indent='-24'>ü Evacuation routes</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 24, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='24' indent='-24'>ü Rally points</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 24, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='24' indent='-24'>ü Use of emergency equipment</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 24, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='24' indent='-24'>ü How to report emergencies</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Day and overnight camps have many of the same problems of which staffers must be aware. But overnight camps offer special challenges with which staffer must deal as well. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Some of these unique issues are homesickness, dietary fussiness, and contentious roommate interactions.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Sometimes dealing with parents presents unique challenges. Click the video for more information.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Now, let’s talk about camper discipline. The misbehavior of one camper, or a group of campers, should not be allowed to impact negatively on the experiences of others. Bullying, theft, drugs, alcohol, and disrespectful behavior are not tolerated. Be sure to immediately report misbehavior to your supervisor, no matter how small it may seem. Remember, we want camp to be enjoyable and safe for everyone.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Lastly, be a positive role model for youth by maintaining an attitude of respect, loyalty, patience, courtesy, tact and maturity. Be professional and refrain from intimate displays of affection toward others.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Remember that this learning module is just an introduction to youth camp safety.
